Michael Priest

Michael Priest studied at Birmingham College of Art before being called up for national service, he subsequently worked as a designer in advertising before embarking upon a career as a lecturer in painting and printmaking. He taught initially in Chesterfield, moving to Shrewsbury College of Art and Technology in 1973 where he remained until 1994, teaching art to a generation of young people.

Michael’s work is in many private collections and he was sponsored by the Welsh Arts Council to create Landscape Connections a series of nine large paintings. For Michael, the ideas for the paintings and prints come from experiences he has in working in the landscape with watercolours and drawings.

From these initial responses to time and place he develops ideas in sketchbooks to determine directions to follow for the impressive oil on canvas paintings and elegant oil on paper mono-prints. Michael states that “…the use of colour is an important part of my work and in its transparent and opaque application it defines the spatial awareness I seek. Using the juxtaposition of colour, I want forms to advance, retreat or hang in suspension against fields of other hues. Through the use of contrasting marks, both painted and printed, I hope I enable them to form a conspicuous and unified surface to complete the work”.
